Chromium is an essential trace mineral — meaning the body requires it but only in very small amounts (micrograms, not milligrams). The biologically active form found in food and supplements is trivalent chromium (Cr³⁺), which is distinct from the toxic hexavalent chromium (Cr⁶⁺) found in industrial settings. The two should not be confused.
What does chromium do?
Chromium is involved in the normal metabolism of macronutrients — carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. It enhances the activity of insulin, the hormone that enables cells to take up glucose from the bloodstream. Chromium is thought to potentiate insulin's action by interacting with an insulin-sensitising protein called chromodulin (also known as LMWCr — low molecular weight chromium-binding substance).
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has confirmed that chromium "contributes to normal macronutrient metabolism and to the maintenance of normal blood glucose levels."
What is chromium picolinate?
Chromium picolinate is chromium bound to three molecules of picolinic acid. Picolinic acid is an organic acid derived from tryptophan metabolism. The combination improves the absorption of chromium in the digestive tract compared to inorganic chromium salts. This makes picolinate one of the most bioavailable forms of chromium available in supplements, alongside chromium polynicotinate and chromium chloride.
Dietary sources
Chromium is found in whole grains, broccoli, green beans, grape juice, meats, and some spices. The chromium content of food varies considerably depending on soil conditions and food processing. Refined foods generally contain less chromium than whole food equivalents.
Dosage
The adequate intake for chromium is approximately 25–35 mcg per day for adults. Supplements typically provide 200–1000 mcg. At standard supplement doses, chromium picolinate is considered safe and well-tolerated.
