Graviola (Annona muricata), also known as soursop, guanábana, or in Arabic as القشطة (al-qushta), is a small tropical tree native to Central and South America, the Caribbean, and parts of Africa. All parts of the tree — fruit, leaves, bark, seeds, and roots — have been used in traditional medicine systems across these regions for centuries, with uses ranging from digestive support to skin applications.
Active compounds: annonaceous acetogenins
The most studied compounds in graviola are annonaceous acetogenins — a class of polyketide compounds found only in plants of the Annonaceae family. Over 100 individual acetogenins have been identified in Annona muricata. The most studied include annonacin, bullatacin, and squamocin.
Acetogenins act as potent inhibitors of mitochondrial complex I (NADH ubiquinone oxidoreductase) — an enzyme in the electron transport chain responsible for ATP production. Because rapidly dividing cells (including certain abnormal cells) have heightened energy demands, they are theoretically more vulnerable to complex I inhibition than normal resting cells. This mechanism has driven significant laboratory interest in acetogenins, though it is important to note that this research is primarily at the cell culture and animal model stage.
Antioxidant properties
Beyond acetogenins, graviola leaves and fruit contain significant quantities of flavonoids, alkaloids, and tannins with demonstrated antioxidant activity. In vitro studies show graviola extracts scavenge free radicals and reduce oxidative stress markers in cell models. Antioxidant compounds in the plant include quercetin, kaempferol, and various phenolic acids.
Traditional uses
In the Caribbean and Latin America, graviola leaf tea has been traditionally used for conditions including inflammation, fever, digestive upset, and skin infections. In West African traditional medicine, leaves are applied topically for skin conditions. The fruit itself is widely consumed as food and juice — it has a distinctive sweet-tart flavour and is nutritionally rich in vitamin C, B vitamins, potassium, and magnesium.
Immune support
Graviola extracts have demonstrated immunomodulatory effects in animal studies, including stimulation of natural killer cell activity. These findings have not yet been replicated in large human clinical trials, but they align with the plant's traditional reputation for strengthening the body's defences.
Important note on safety
Graviola supplements should be used with informed awareness. High doses of acetogenins have neurotoxic potential in animal models — annonacin has been associated with an atypical form of Parkinsonism (atypical parkinsonian syndrome) in populations consuming large amounts of soursop fruit over long periods. Standard supplement doses are much lower than the quantities involved in these associations, but long-term high-dose use is not recommended, and graviola should not be taken during pregnancy.
Dosage
Commercial supplements typically provide 500–2000 mg of dried graviola leaf or fruit extract per serving. Most products recommend 1–2 capsules daily with food. Use as directed on the label.
