How to Read a Supplement Label: A Beginner's Guide

Supplement labels can be confusing. Here is a plain-English guide to the key parts of any label and what they actually mean.

If you have ever stood in front of a supplement and not been sure what you are actually looking at, you are not alone. Supplement labels follow specific formats but use jargon that can make them harder to read than they need to be. Here is a plain guide to the parts that matter most.

Serving Size and Servings Per Container

This tells you how much of the product constitutes one "dose" and how many doses are in the bottle. A bottle of 60 capsules with a serving size of 2 capsules has 30 servings — not 60. This is easy to miss when comparing prices.

The Supplement Facts Panel

This is the table that lists every ingredient, how much is in each serving, and the % Daily Value (% DV) if applicable. The % DV is based on a reference intake — it tells you roughly what percentage of an average adult's daily requirement that amount covers. Note that % DV is not set for all nutrients, so some will just show an amount with an asterisk (*) noting that no daily value has been established.

Proprietary Blends

Watch out for these. A proprietary blend lists multiple ingredients under one group name with a total amount for the blend — but does not reveal how much of each individual ingredient is present. This makes it impossible to compare the actual dose of a specific ingredient across products. If an ingredient is important to you, prefer products that list it individually with its amount.

Other Ingredients

This section lists excipients — fillers, binders, coatings, and capsule materials. Common ones include cellulose, magnesium stearate, silicon dioxide, and rice flour. These are generally inert, but if you have a specific allergy or sensitivity (such as to soy or gelatin), this is where it will appear.

Third-Party Testing

Seals from organisations like USP, NSF International, or Informed Sport indicate that the product has been independently tested to verify that it contains what the label says. This is especially relevant for products where quality consistency matters.

Expiry Date

All supplements sold by Supplements & More are authentic US-brand products with valid expiry dates. When ordering via WhatsApp, you can ask us about the specific lot's expiry if it matters to you.
