Mastic gum (المستكة) is a resin harvested from the Pistacia lentiscus tree, primarily on the Greek island of Chios. It has been traded across the Mediterranean for thousands of years, and Lebanon has long been part of that trade route. In the Eastern Mediterranean, mastic has a place in cooking, traditional medicine, and daily wellness practice.
Where It Comes From
The Pistacia lentiscus tree grows across the Mediterranean basin, but the resin production that gives the highest quality mastic comes almost exclusively from the southern part of Chios — a condition determined by local soil and microclimate. Mastic from Chios carries a protected designation of origin (PDO).
Traditional Uses in the Region
In Lebanon and across the Levant, mastic has traditional uses in food (flavouring breads, desserts, and coffee), dentistry (chewing the raw resin to support oral hygiene), and general wellness. It has a distinctive fresh, pine-like flavour.
As a Supplement
Modern mastic gum supplements typically come as capsules containing powdered resin. The research on mastic gum has focused on its effects on digestive comfort. It has a long history of traditional use in this area.
